Project goals

The goal of this project is to present possibility of municipal wastewater reuse for agriculture irrigation using membrane ecologically sustainable technologies which could directly increase agricultural production, increase water availability (provision of an additional dependable water resource), integrated and sustainable use of water resources, avoid using drinking water for irrigation, reduce over-abstraction of surface and groundwater, reduce nutrient loads to receiving waters, decrease water scarcity and stress, and decrease their dependence on climate change.

The main objective of this project is development of hybrid process for treatment of municipal wastewater based on application of membrane technologies (UF, NF, RO, MBR). These technologies provide high quality effluent which can be used as a valuable source for agriculture irrigation.

  • systematic investigation of membrane processes (UF, NF, RO, MBR) at model and real wastewater in laboratory scale to find optimal combination and configuration for the treatment of wastewater,

  • systematic monitoring of the characteristics of real municipal wastewater (physico-chemical parameters, heavy metals, emerging contaminants, toxicity etc.),

  • development and construction of UF and MBR pilot plants,

  • treatment of real municipal wastewater on pilot plants, and

  • adjustment of pilot plants for treatment of municipal wastewater to achieve optimal conditions of treatment in accordance to legislations, laws and guidelines.
